How to do it

  1. 1. Design for the small size first

Shrink your capsule to 231 × 87 before you approve it. If the title or the subject is hard to read there, it is hard to read for most shoppers.

  2. 2. Separate the subject from Steam's background

Steam lists sit on a dark blue-grey (#1b2838). A bright focal subject, a rim light or a lighter background zone keeps the capsule from melting into the page.

  3. 3. Use one strong accent color

In a row of capsules, a single saturated accent (a warm light, a colored logo) draws the eye more than an evenly muted palette.

  4. 4. Keep the logo big and short

Drop taglines and small text. At list size only the logo and one clear shape survive.

  5. 5. Make every required size

Steam crops differently per placement, so design each asset rather than resizing one image.

Questions

What size is a Steam capsule?

The small capsule is uploaded at 462 × 174 and shown at about 231 × 87 in lists. The header capsule is 920 × 430 and the main capsule 1232 × 706. All sizes are in the table on this page.

Should a Steam capsule be bright?

In our index, pages with brighter capsules at list size score higher on average, and the top quarter of pages has noticeably brighter capsules than the rest. Dark art can work, but it needs strong contrast and a bright focal point.
