How this Steam revenue calculator works

Units sold = total reviews × sales per review. We use a median of about 35 and show a range of roughly 20 to 60, because the ratio varies by price, genre and age.

Developer net starts from units × list price, then removes the average lifetime discount, cheaper regional prices, VAT and sales tax (included in Steam prices in most countries), refunds, and finally Valve's tiered share: 30% up to $10M, 25% to $50M, 20% beyond.

The review count comes straight from Steam's public reviews endpoint, so it counts every language, the same total Steam uses for its labels.

Questions

▸How accurate is a Steam revenue estimate?

It's a range, not a number. Estimates from review counts are often within 2× of the truth, but games with unusual audiences (free weekends, bundles, very cheap or very expensive games) can be further off. Use the low and high values as the realistic band.

▸What is the Boxleiter method?

Counting a game's Steam reviews and multiplying by a typical number of sales per review. The median today is around 35 sales per review; older or cheaper games tend to sit higher, and games with very engaged communities lower.

▸Why is net revenue so much lower than gross?

Most copies sell at a discount or at cheaper regional prices, prices include VAT in many countries, some buyers refund, and Valve keeps 30% of the first $10 million. Together that usually leaves 40–55% of list price × units.

▸Can I estimate my own game before launch?

Use the Wishlist Calculator instead: before launch, wishlists predict first-week sales better than anything else.
